Rock Steady

Jeans - Costa Blanca, Peep Toe Booties - Le Chateau,
Striped Shirt - Joe Fresh Style, Biker Vest - Urban Outfitters
Necklace - Souvenier, Bracelets - H&M
Unsurprisingly, I do not sit in this pose very frequently (hence the need that I felt to try to mask my obvious discomfort). Anyway, this truly unflattering photo outlines precicely what I wore today! You see, as a primarily "good" and "well behaved" young lady I like to play pretend by dressing bad. This inevitably led to a rock and roll inspired look, which, to be honest, acts as a basis for most day's wardrobe choices. Anyway, like I said, I am generally very well behaved, but I took a cue from my biker-esque look today and cut all my classes and opted instead for wandering the streets aimlessly with flask in hand. Of course, I didn't actually do this, but wouldn't that have been badass?

P.S. I have been nominated for two very stylish prom awards today! (Best Dressed and Most Likely to be on the Cover of Vogue)...I'm truly very honoured :)

Hazy Day = Cozy Gray

Today I looked out my window and I saw, well I saw just about nothing. Why? Because the fog was too thick and the rain too heavy. Now whenever this type of weather strikes my immediate instinct is to cozy up in comfy clothing and bury myself indoors (unless of course it is super warm in which case I trampoline!) Today was no exception to the cozy rule, so I incorporated my new acid wash sweater into my look (see yesterday's post). I mostly just snuggled up with some warm tea and caught up on my painting. Hopefully tomorrow will bring better weather and in turn, better looks. Anyway, happy Wednesday...just a couple more days until the weekend! :)

1,2,3,4 Tell Me That You Love Me More

The title is not only a reference to a Feist song, but it is also what my new clothes would be saying right now if they could talk to me! As you can see, these are my new purchases from this past weekend downtown. I ended up purchasing a lot of neutral colours because I was kind of in the market for some basics. Anyway, I hope you guys can get as much enjoyment out of these new finds as I do!

Leapord Flats - H&M
Bodycon Zip Dress - H&M
Faux Leather Vest - Urban Outfitters
Blue Purse - Aldo
Black Slouchy Tank - Urban Outfitters
Tan Flats - Urban Outfitters
Distressed Jeans - Costa Blanca
Reconstructed Shorts - Urban Outfitters
Acid Wash Sweatshirt - American Apparel
White Tank - Costa Blanca

Teaser: Fetish Footwear

Today as I was watching my favourite cheesy television show The Bachelorette, I witnessed a true example of the most deadly type of male, the foot fetish guy. Yes, these seemingly eligible bachelors roam the streets much like the rest of us, and can only be detected by their unnaturally strong attraction to the bare foot (often of a woman). A terrifying thought.

With this in mind, I myself happened to pick up some killer fetish footwear of my own on my recent trip downtown. These strappy stilettos would surely catch the eye (and heart) of any true foot enthusiast. Since I generally want to avoid the company of this sort (no offense!), when I decide to take these shoes out for a walk in the streets, I'll be watching my back...and my feet too!

I'm Late I'm Late for a Very Important Date...

Unfortunately, due to poor time management on my part I am only able to post another one of my self portraits today. This one features me in front of a tree with arrows tacked to it saying "which way?", "this way", and "that way" (it's a little hard to read when it's smaller!) The idea behind this was that when we are young we are faced with so many important decisions and it is often tough to determine which path to take (especially when we recieve so much outside pressure!) This is also a modern day throwback to one of my favourite Disney movies "Alice in Wonderland". Ironically in this film characters also deal with unfortunate time management skills. If you haven't seen it I recommend watching it immediately!

Shopgirl

Leather Jacket - Danier, Sunglasses - RayBan,
Dress - American Eagle, Belt - Urban Outfitters,
Pumps - Sterling Shoes

I took to the downtown streets with my mom today to do some much needed summer shopping as the weather finally cooperated! I finally got to put my new leather jacket to use, and paired it with a basic dress and some grey pumps (easy to change in and out of!) Luckily, I managed to scout out some great pieces which you'll hear more about later. Until then, hope you all are having lovely weekends! :)

Vanity Fair

In photography we have to do a self portrait for our final assignment (which I was super excited about). Above is one of my shots...I know, the smudge from my scanner really ads to the effect. Anyways, tomorrow I am going downtown to shop with my mother (as long as the weather permits). This time around I am looking to buy some fabulous summer wear, along with some basics. I'd really like a black pencil skirt (to pair with band tees of course), as well as some tanks from American Apparel, a little black bomber jacket, some bottoms (I only have two functional pairs of shorts right now!), and I'll likely pick up some shoes as well... anyway, you will surely be hearing more about that upon my return! Love always, Nikki

Modern Romance

Today I encountered a group of people who just seemed so genuinely, well...cool. So much so in fact, that I felt drawn towards them, and inclined to be their friend (the girl who complimented my outfit probably helped with this!) Isn't it peculiar how sometimes you just know that you will click with another individual just by laying eyes on them? I would imagine that love at first sight - if the phenomenon does in fact exist - is something similar to this.
With cool people, and the notion of true love on my mind, I could not help but think back to February VOGUE's feature spread on uber cool model Agyness Deyn and fiance Albert Hammond Jr. of "The Strokes". There is something about these two (even while posing in photos) that is just so endearing to me. They seem to be genuinely in love, and decidedly unaware of whatever it is anyone else thinks about them. If only our whole world were littered with couples like these two...we'd all just be a part of one big circle of love. A charming notion indeed! :)

Singing the Blues

Denim Jacket: American Eagle Outfitters, Skirt: H&M,
Zipper Cuff: Urban Outfitters, Necklace: Guess,
Tank: American Eagle Outfitters

Today I was singing the blues to myself as I dealt with many of lifes little incidents (example: a school bus parking in front of my car). I think my expression in these photos illustrates my attitude at the time, although what I realized is that no matter how frustrating these things can be, they really are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things (especially when there's always someone there to guide you through it all - literally and figuratively!) On another note: I had planned on finally wearing my new yellow bomber jacket today but the warm weather interfered with that so I did a bit of a 90s throwback instead!

Who Let the Dogs Out?

As I had been made aware earlier today that I would not have much time to post (essays, tests, the usual) I had been prepared to just post the standard "what I wore today" snapshot. Unfortunately due to unforseen complications (I look god awful) this was not possible. Therefore instead I decided to create the cheesiest picture of all time using Teddy as a model (he never fails to look his best). Anyways, point is, I am a self proclaimed list maker, and over the past couple of months have acquired quite the list of songs/bands to be downloaded (either by personal choice, or after being advised by friends or NYLON magazine - which never fails to make me seem "in the know"). Here are some of my current "to sample" songs and artists. Maybe this list will inspire you to try out some new tunes of your own!

What is Love? - Haddaway (a recent classic)
The Raveonettes (I have acquired a taste for them, now I want more!)
Daft Punk
Franz Ferdinand (their new cd has been described as "sexy" by various journalists)
The Whip
Dragonette
Telepathe
Bat for Lashes (recommended by one of my most trusted bloggers)
Cut Copy
Animal Collective
American Woman - Lenny Kravitz (guilty pleasure)

Until next time, Wea jai! (That's how you say goodbye in Ecuador)

Shopping on Saturday

This long weekend I decided to treat myself to a lovely shopping trip (a girl just needs that from time to time). With that being said, I thought that I would showcase my purches to you, dear readers. Sometimes friends ask me what my secret is to shopping, and the biggest piece of advice I can give to anyone is not to limit yourself to just one store. Sure, it's good to have one place to fall back on for wardrobe staples, but if you limit yourself to one place you are immediately eliminating thousands of other possibilities. Case in point, my list is as follows:

1. Yellow Leather Jacket - Danier Leather
2. Leapord Halter - American Eagle Outfitters
3. Feather Earrings - Aldo Shoes
4. Red & Black Tiger Tank - DTox
5. Studded Clutch - Sterling Shoes
6. Grey Peep Toe Ankle Booties - Le Chateau
7. Ornamental Tank Dress - Costa Blanca

All items, particularly the ankle booties are far more wonderful up close and in person.

[Side Note] For whatever reason Photoshop felt the desire to turn all of my images into greyscale. I didn't fight it.

Zap! Bam! Pow!

Today I watched one of my favourite episodes of the OC. It is where Seth dresses up as a superhero (Spiderman in particular) and wields his powers to win back Summer (the love of his life). Actually, it's a little bit more complicated than that, but I thought: if becoming a superhero can help you to obtain your heart's desire, what am I waiting for? My modern day hero ensemble would be as follows (clockwise from top left):

Leotard - American Apparel - What Superhero doesn't wear a leotard of sorts? This one by American Apparel was simply too cool to pass up.

Lash Stiletto Mascara - Maybelline - When trying to blend in with ordinary humans it is best to keep a natural, clean face, however long spiky lashes are the perfect device to attract anyone's Superman.

Leather Leggings - Topshop - I always imagined my alter-ego self as being tough and badass. With that being said every Superhero needs to be flexible and mobile. These leggings are the best of both worlds, the appearance of leather and the mobility of spandex!

Boots - Dr.Martins - My favourite punky style, both durable (for combat) and intimidating!

Leather Jacket - Danier - Every hero (even really tough ones) needs a bright staple accessory to balance out their dark appearance. This jacket follows the two unspoken rules of a Superhero staple: 1) It says "don't mess with me", 2) It's in a primary colour.

What would you wear if you were a Superhero?

Why, Hello!

Hi there, as a newbie blogger I just figured it would be best that I introduced myself before I jumped right into things. My name is Nikki (sometimes fondly referred to as Nicoli Poli among other things), and I am a student who will be starting University next year at Ryerson studying Fashion Design.
A few things you should know about me: I can't take a self portrait to save my life, I am not a model, I can hardly use photoshop, and I haven't applied my knowledge of HTML since the eighth grade. So why blog? Perhaps because I simply enjoy talking about myself! Perhaps like many others, I just had the need to brodcast my thoughts to the online world. Whatever the case, I'm hoping that I'll bring a different perspective to the heavily crowded world of fashion blogging. You'll surely learn more about me as I continue to post. Until then, thanks for reading! :)
